Danish Dwarf’ Poppy – Compact Heritage Beauty with Spectacular Blooms

‘Danish Dwarf’ is a unique, compact selection of the classic heritage cultivar ‘Danish Flag’ (Papaver somniferum). It delivers massive, brilliant scarlet-red blossoms featuring deeply laciniate (feathered and fringed) petals. At the center of each bloom sits a crisp, ivory-white square patch that forms a perfect white cross against the red field—perfectly mirroring the national flag of Denmark (the Dannebrog).

While standard varieties easily stretch past 90 cm and require staking, ‘Danish Dwarf’ stays at a sturdy 45 to 60 cm (18–24 inches). This compact growth habit makes it exceptionally robust, wind-resistant, and ideal for borders, cottage gardens, and large patio containers.

Once the dramatic petals drop, they leave behind gorgeous, architectural, silvery blue-green seed pods. These pods provide structural interest in the garden well into autumn, or they can be harvested and dried for everlasting floral arrangements.
